Bio

Marry a big idea
with a beautiful image
With Henri Cartier-Bresson
& Martine Franck
on their terrace in Paris.
I’m an award winning advertising creative director, with worldwide, multi-channel marketing campaigns in my portfolio.
What you'll see is my attempt to make ads as beautiful as possible, to entertain and have reverence for every viewer interrupted by them. I’ve learned those things from some of the great masters of advertising and design, such as Dan Wieden, Lou Dorfsman, Susan Hoffman, John Jay, Ralph Ammirati, Katsu Kimura, and Ikko Tanaka. I've worked with directors Tarsem Singh and Tony Kaye, and world renowned
photographers like Martine Franck—and honored to have spent time with her and husband Henri Cartier-Bresson, whose conversations and walks through Paris I'll never forget. My biggest influences, besides those mentioned, are Milton Glaser, George Lois, Helmut Krone, Bill Bernbach, A. M. Cassandre, Pablo Picasso, David Lean, Ruth Ansel, Michelangelo Antonioni, Jacques Tati, Dieter Rams, and
Andy Warhol.
I've been the executive creative director of a number of large advertising agencies in New York City, a worldwide creative director managing global brands with numerous creative departments around the world, and started my first agency in Portland, Oregon called BIG ADS, where our work regularly won top awards at the One Show, Communication Arts Annuals, New York Festivals International Advertising Awards, the Addys, and local Portland show, Rosey's. Today I operate as a creative consultancy called RA Bentley Ads in Portland, Oregon where I handle all marketing and advertising for 2 different distilleries and an art show called AD ART SHOW, all in New York City.
In my position managing creative departments, I looked for and fostered creative talent in the direction of the big idea and beautiful image. I have a passion for teaching and was an instructor for advertising art direction at the Pacific Northwest College of Art, and taught advertising concept for portfolio classes at the Ad House in New York City.
I was a design intern for the package designer Katsu Kimura in Tokyo while his studio, Package Direction Company created the second-generation packaging for Apple’s Macintosh computer, and where drawing tables were being replaced by those same simple 128 kB Macs.
I spent 10 years in the U.S. Navy as an Illustrator Draftsman creating some of the first digital publications for Naval Intelligence. I have a drawing hanging in the Pentagon of the U.S.S. Blue Ridge, Flagship of the 7th Fleet, one of 4 ships I served on. I was certified as a rescue swimmer for Naval amphibious operations. And, for 6 months, I was one of five crew members aboard a 51’ sailboat in the Pacific Ocean, at one point surviving 8 days sailing through a typhoon with 100 mph winds and 40 foot seas between Japan and Guam. So, needless to say, I have a deep appreciation for life on the dry parts of this planet, and can handle high pressure situations in any storm.
Thank you.
